Zhongsheng Group Holdings (HKG:881) Jumps 3.6% This Week, Though Earnings Growth Is Still Tracking Behind Five-year Shareholder Returns
The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. One great example is Zhongsheng Group Holdings Limited (HKG:881) which saw its share price drive 121% higher over five years. And in the last month, the share price has gained 9.4%. But the price may well have benefitted from a buoyant market, since stocks have gained 6.3% in the last thirty days.
Since it's been a strong week for Zhongsheng Group Holdings shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over half a decade, Zhongsheng Group Holdings managed to grow its earnings per share at 23% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 17% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 10.21 also suggests market apprehension.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
SEHK:881 Earnings Per Share Growth November 18th 2022It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. This free interactive report on Zhongsheng Group Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Zhongsheng Group Holdings' TSR for the last 5 years was 136%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 23% in the twelve months, Zhongsheng Group Holdings shareholders did even worse, losing 45% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 19%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
