Investing in Associated Banc-Corp (NYSE:ASB) Five Years Ago Would Have Delivered You a 1.9% Gain
Investing in Associated Banc-Corp (NYSE:ASB) Five Years Ago Would Have Delivered You a 1.9% Gain
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Associated Banc-Corp (NYSE:ASB) share price up 11% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 14% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.
Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.
Check out our latest analysis for Associated Banc-Corp
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
While the share price declined over five years, Associated Banc-Corp actually managed to increase EPS by an average of 8.4% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Or possibly, the market was previously very optimistic, so the stock has disappointed, despite improving EPS.
Generally speaking we'd expect to see stronger share price increases on the back of sustained EPS growth, but other metrics may hold a clue to why the share price performance is relatively modest.
Revenue is actually up 0.3% over the time period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity.
You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
NYSE:ASB Earnings and Revenue Growth September 23rd 2022We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Associated Banc-Corp the TSR over the last 5 years was 1.9%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Associated Banc-Corp has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 2.8% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 0.4% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Associated Banc-Corp , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
