Possible Bearish Signals as The New York Times Company (NYSE:NYT) Insiders Disposed of US$1.3m Worth of Stock
Possible Bearish Signals as The New York Times Company (NYSE:NYT) Insiders Disposed of US$1.3m Worth of Stock
Quite a few The New York Times Company (NYSE:NYT) insiders sold their shares over the past year, which may be a cause for concern. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Check out our latest analysis for New York Times
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At New York Times
The CEO, President & Director, Meredith Kopit Levien, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$430k worth of shares at a price of US$43.00 each. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$30.89). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.
Insiders in New York Times didn't buy any shares in the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Insider Ownership Of New York Times
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 0.6% of New York Times shares, worth about US$30m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
So What Do The New York Times Insider Transactions Indicate?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. Still, the insider transactions at New York Times in the last 12 months are not very heartening. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing. In terms of investment risks, we've identified 1 warning sign with New York Times and understanding it should be part of your investment process.
Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking elsewhere. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies.
