Vistra (NYSE:VST) Shareholders Have Earned a 9.2% CAGR Over the Last Five Years
Vistra (NYSE:VST) Shareholders Have Earned a 9.2% CAGR Over the Last Five Years
If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Vistra Corp. (NYSE:VST) share price is up 41% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Some buyers are laughing, though, with an increase of 31% in the last year.
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.
Check out our latest analysis for Vistra
Because Vistra made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
For the last half decade, Vistra can boast revenue growth at a rate of 15% per year. That's a pretty good long term growth rate. While the share price has gained 7% per year for five years, that's hardly amazing considering the market also rose. You could even argue that the share price was over optimistic, previously.
The image below shows how earnings and revenue have tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
NYSE:VST Earnings and Revenue Growth September 6th 2022It's good to see that there was some significant insider buying in the last three months. That's a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Vistra will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Vistra's TSR for the last 5 years was 55%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Vistra shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 35% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 9% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Vistra better, we need to consider many other factors. For instance, we've identified 1 warning sign for Vistra that you should be aware of.
Vistra is not the only stock that insiders are buying. For those who like to find winning investments this free list of growing companies with recent insider purchasing, could be just the ticket.
