The Total Return for IFAST (SGX:AIY) Investors Has Risen Faster Than Earnings Growth Over the Last Five Years
The Total Return for IFAST (SGX:AIY) Investors Has Risen Faster Than Earnings Growth Over the Last Five Years
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Just think about the savvy investors who held iFAST Corporation Ltd. (SGX:AIY) shares for the last five years, while they gained 379%. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. And in the last month, the share price has gained 14%.
In light of the stock dropping 6.5% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Over half a decade, iFAST managed to grow its earnings per share at 18% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 37% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 72.74.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).
SGX:AIY Earnings Per Share Growth August 25th 2022We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. Dive deeper into the earnings by checking this interactive graph of iFAST's earnings, revenue and cash flow.
What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, iFAST's TSR for the last 5 years was 431%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
iFAST shareholders are down 48% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 5.0%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 40%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for iFAST you should be aware of.
