The Total Return for United Energy Group (HKG:467) Investors Has Risen Faster Than Earnings Growth Over the Last Five Years
The Total Return for United Energy Group (HKG:467) Investors Has Risen Faster Than Earnings Growth Over the Last Five Years
The last three months have been tough on United Energy Group Limited (HKG:467) shareholders, who have seen the share price decline a rather worrying 35%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. In fact, the share price is 149% higher today. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. The more important question is whether the stock is too cheap or too expensive today.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 5.0%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, United Energy Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 7.8% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 20% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between United Energy Group's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for United Energy Group shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 215%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that United Energy Group shareholders are down 30% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 17%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 26%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. Before deciding if you like the current share price, check how United Energy Group scores on these 3 valuation metrics.
