Hopeful week for insiders who might be regretting buying US$8.1m of SelectQuote, Inc. (NYSE:SLQT) stock earlier this year

Insiders who purchased US$8.1m worth of SelectQuote, Inc. (NYSE:SLQT) shares over the past year recouped some of their losses after price gained 18% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at US$5.6m since the time of purchase.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At SelectQuote

The Chief Operating Officer William Grant made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$2.0m worth of shares at a price of US$8.85 each. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$2.98). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Does SelectQuote Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. SelectQuote insiders own about US$68m worth of shares. That equates to 14% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
