Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) had a record-breaking year in 2024, with its stock price and market valuation reaching new highs.

On February 22, 2024, Nvidia's stock price jumped 16.4% to close at a record high of $785.38 per share. This one-day increase added $277 billion to Nvidia's market capitalization, bringing it to $1.96 trillion. According to Reuters, this was the largest single-day gain in market value by any company in Wall Street's history, surpassing Meta Platforms' previous record $196 billion gain on February 2, 2024.

Nvidia's massive stock surge was fueled by strong fourth quarter 2024 earnings results reported on February 21, which significantly beat analysts' expectations. The company's revenue for the quarter grew over 300% year-over-year to $22.1 billion. Demand for Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) used in artificial intelligence computing remained very robust.

For the full year 2024, Nvidia's stock price climbed 58%, accounting for over a quarter of the S&P 500 index's gains. The company solidified its position as the third most valuable U.S. public company, behind only Microsoft and Apple.

Nvidia attributed its standout performance to strong sales growth in data center products and gaming chips. However, its business in China slowed, amounting to only 9% of fourth quarter revenue versus 22% the previous quarter. This raised some concerns that U.S. limits on semiconductor exports to China may be impacting Nvidia's growth.
