CnEVPost ·  May 14 01:12

The designer of the Onvo L60 is Onvo's head of global design, Raul Pires, who has more than 20 years of design experience with Volkswagen, designing several Bentley models.

Nio (NYSE: NIO) today shared the first official images of the L60, the first model from Onvo (Ledao in China), with its sub-brand a day away from launch.

CnEVPost obtained three images from the Nio team that show details of the Onvo L60's headlight and taillight design.

The designer of the Onvo L60 is Raul Pires, Onvo's vice president and head of global design, who has more than 20 years of design experience at the Volkswagen Group, designing a number of Bentley models, CnEVPost has learned.

Nio will officially launch the Onvo brand on May 15 at 7:30 pm Beijing time, when the event will be video-streamed live.

The Onvo L60 will take on the Tesla Model Y, aiming primarily at the family-centric smart all-electric vehicle market in the RMB 250,000 yuan ($34,540) class, Nio said earlier this month at a ceremony to roll out its 500,000th mass-produced vehicle.

The BOM (bill of materials) cost of Onvo's first model will be about 10 percent cheaper than that of Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) Model Y, Nio founder, chairman and CEO William Li said previously.

Low energy consumption was a priority in the design of the Onvo L60, according to the Nio sub-brand's chief.

"We've prioritized low power consumption since Day 1," Onvo president Ai Tiecheng said in an interview with local media outlet 36kr, according to the text of the interview released yesterday.

For lower vehicle energy consumption, Nio founder, chairman, and CEO William Li vetoed a vehicle styling that had been around for six months, Ai said.

At the time, the Onvo team had a model styling design that everyone thought was stunning, but Li said he needed to use the Chinese New Year holiday to think about it, Ai said, adding that Li later rejected the design because of the sacrifice of vehicle range.

"Batteries cost a lot of money, and if we reduce the power consumption, then the range is longer and it saves the user money," Ai said.
