Another inflation report
We have another inflation report (PPI) coming out on Thurs before the market opens. In case you’re not aware, PPI is a measurement of wholesale inflation.
This report is the last piece of data for the Fed before they meet again on 19 and 20 March.
The market is anticipating no rate cut in Mar and May. But how about June? We are about to find out soon.

Record high, again
S&P500 flew to record high again after an impressive quarterly results by Nvidia. Just this year, S&P500 has hit all time high more than 10 times.

From Oct 2023 till date, the S&P500 has rallied more than 20%. Impressive.
What’s more impressive is we are just less than 1.5% away from hitting the 5000 market for SPX, and 500 mark for SPY.
But this is one huge level and barrier to cross. Imminent pullback coming?

Pause
Major indexes are taking a pause now, after 5 straight winning weeks.
The magnificent 7 all pulled back quite significantly with Nvidia falling 2.7%, Google dropping about 2%, Microsoft, Tesla and Meta retreating around 1.4%.

What if today is a green day?
Some wild thesis:
Powell does not sound very hawkish during his speech on Wed. He basically repeated what he said in the past: data dependent, proceed carefully, 1 more rate hike, higher for longer etc.
Then, the market sold off, where it “should have” rallied, because there was no surprise from Powell per se.
On Thurs, some may think that the market should bounce (which happened previously during post FOMC). Yet the market sold off again.

It has been a rough August. We had put behind us 2 key events which saw no major surprise. That’s a good news. As a result, the stock market was positive last Friday.
However, all 3 major indices are on track to close the month with a loss.
That said, investors would still hope the positive momentum from last Friday can continue into this week.
