Private equity investors are demanding returns. One risky method that satisfies their demands is setting records and becoming increasingly popular. Dividend capitalization involves owners of lower-rated companies taking on debt in the name of the company, handing over cash to investors, and skyrocketing in the first half of 2024. According to PitchBook LCD data, leveraged loans of around $30.2 billion have been sold so far this year to pay these checks, which is at least the highest level in the past decade, equivalent to the amount in 2021. The managers of the exclusive capital pool have long promised to their limited partners.
