  • 00:00 Does Trump then have the votes?
  • 00:02 Do they have the votes in the Senate now to pass the bill?
  • 00:06 This has been working through the motions
  • 00:08 and it continues to as we speak.
  • 00:12 Exactly.
  • 00:13 It's
  • 00:14 Trump is close, but he's also cutting it very close.
  • 00:18 So the Senate balance is 53 seats for the Republicans.
  • 00:21 They have
  • 00:22 8, as you said, who voiced some sort of opposition,
  • 00:25 2 who are
  • 00:26 likely in the no category.
  • 00:28 Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky is a no saying that he sees this bill as fiscally irresponsible for the way that it increases the
  • 00:38 the debt in the US.
  • 00:39 We had Thom Tillis
  • 00:41 who's voiced his concern about
  • 00:44 what this will mean for people on with health insurance, Medicaid, and also for rural hospitals, which he sees a
  • 00:51 cut in funding happening, which would really hurt hospitals in his state.
  • 00:56 So we have some fiscal conservatives who don't think that the
  • 01:00 cuts are enough.
  • 01:02 We have some
  • 01:03 what are considered moderate Republicans such as
  • 01:06 Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, who are also concerned, have the same sorts of concerns as Tillis
  • 01:14 about
  • 01:15 Medicaid.
  • 01:17 I'm sorry,
  • 01:17 Medicaid and
  • 01:20 also what this will do for rural hospitals.
  • 01:23 We have some concerns about the
  • 01:25 the
  • 01:26 removal of
  • 01:27 subsidies for clean energy, which could hurt some industries in the states, in their states.
  • 01:33 So there's a lot going on.
  • 01:35 It's close.
  • 01:36 And
  • 01:37 the meth is there.
  • 01:39 If we're at 5050.
  • 01:41 JD Vance, the vice president,
  • 01:43 cast the deciding vote.
  • 01:44 So it would have to be for defections for this bill to be sunk.
  • 01:51 OK, just four, just 4 defections in terms of the mechanics then, John, And what to watch
  • 01:56 as this works its way through the Senate and whether or not this will actually get to Trump's desk by July the 4th.
  • 02:02 What, what are we watching for as you weigh up those debates that, of course
  • 02:06 are taking place on on both sides of this Republican Party?
  • 02:08 Now,
  • 02:11 sure.
  • 02:11 The,
  • 02:12 the concerns are really about these issues of whether it will,
  • 02:17 it will help if,
  • 02:18 if it will satisfy the fiscal conservatives who really want more cuts to Medicaid
  • 02:24 or if it's going to worry the
  • 02:27 the moderates if
  • 02:29 these things go too far.
  • 02:31 And also we have public opinion which is siding against the bill.
  • 02:35 Pew Research
  • 02:37 survey show that about 50% of Americans are opposed, 30% support.
  • 02:41 A Washington Post Ipsos poll showed even greater
  • 02:45 concern about it.
  • 02:46 About 60% show that they disapprove the bill.
  • 02:49 So what we're looking at now is,
  • 02:52 yeah, a lot of horse trading.
  • 02:54 See if we can get some of these.
  • 02:56 Yes, it's to Nos.
  • 02:57 And we have, of course, all the Democrats and those who caucus with the Democrats
  • 03:01 are going to,
  • 03:02 are not going to be voting for this bill.
