  • 00:00 Well, someone who definitely had her alarm set earlier this morning was Bonnie Quinn.
  • 00:03 She is outside Macy's flagship store here in Midtown Manhattan, Herald Square,
  • 00:08 where you're keeping an eye on the kickoff to the Black Friday season.
  • 00:12 I thought everybody just bought everything online Now, Bonnie, are people actually outside in 30° weather here on November
  • 00:19 29th?
  • 00:22 Beautiful.
  • 00:23 Chris.
  • 00:23 Morning for it, Romain.
  • 00:24 And yes, they were.
  • 00:25 You just missed the big scrum
  • 00:27 going into Macy's.
  • 00:28 It opened about two minutes ago
  • 00:30 and well, as you can see, the line is already gone in, so it's not like Black Friday's past.
  • 00:34 Nevertheless, there were those customers that wanted to get those extra door Buster deals and of course those gift cards that Macy's give out to the first 100 customers at the beginning of the day.
  • 00:44 Now don't let this fool you, we are going to see a huge potentially record number of customers today
  • 00:51 across America, 131.7 million according to the National Retail Federation.
  • 00:56 And 2/3 of those will be in stores, which is really fascinating when you think about it because the cadence of Black Friday has been changing over the years.
  • 01:04 And as you say, you don't really need to go in store on Black Friday or
  • 01:08 really any day this weekend.
  • 01:10 All these deals are mostly available online.
  • 01:13 But those retailers and you,
  • 01:14 we're talking about Target, Walmart and
  • 01:17 all of the earnings season that we've seen, they are competing for those dollars very, very strongly this season.
  • 01:23 And there are 5 fewer days in the holiday shopping calendar this year.
  • 01:27 So
  • 01:28 each of these retailers wants those boots in the door.
  • 01:31 And certainly this morning on a
  • 01:33 35° morning on 35th St., they got some of them so far.
