Aegon NV on Thursday reported a narrowed loss for the third quarter of the year, although its operating result declined, reflecting adverse claims in the U.S.

The Dutch insurance and asset-management company booked a net loss of 60 million euros ($68.9 million) for the quarter compared with a net loss of EUR418 million for the third quarter of 2020 and a net profit of EUR849 million for the second quarter of 2021. The third-quarter result included a one-time charge of EUR470 million, related to management actions to release capital.

Aegon's operating result fell 16% on year to EUR443 million.

"Performance improvements across most of our businesses, supported by the disciplined execution of our operational improvement plan, were offset by elevated mortality in the United States," Chief Executive Lard Friese said.
