Zalando SE said Wednesday that revenue increased in the third quarter as it continued to gain new customers and benefited from more frequent orders, despite swinging to a net loss.

The Berlin-based online retailer posted a net loss of 8.4 million euros ($9.7 million), compared with a net profit of EUR58.5 million a year earlier.

The company's closely watched adjusted earnings before interest and taxes fell to EUR9.8 million from EUR118.2 million, with the corresponding margin down to 0.4% from 6.4%.

However, revenue climbed to EUR2.28 billion from EUR1.85 billion, while gross merchandise volume--a key indicator for sales growth--rose to EUR3.08 billion from EUR2.46 billion.

"Despite growing inflation and supply chain uncertainties, we remain confident to achieve our upgraded full-year outlook and are now looking forward to exciting our customers and supporting our partners over cyber week and the upcoming festive season," Chief Financial Officer David Schroeder said.

For 2021, Zalando said it continues to expect adjusted EBIT in the upper half of the guided range of EUR400 million and EUR475 million, revenue between EUR10.1 billion and EUR10.5 billion, and gross merchandise volume between EUR14 billion and EUR14.6 billion.
