Burberry Group PLC said Wednesday that it has appointed Jonathan Akeroyd, currently chief executive officer at Gianni Versace SpA, as its new CEO.

Mr. Akeroyd will join the British luxury-goods company on April 1. He has been Versace's CEO since June 2016, and previously held the same position at Alexander McQueen from 2004 to 2016.

Burberry's current head Marco Gobetti in June said he was leaving the group to join Salvatore Ferragamo SpA as its new chief executive. He will step down from the role and leave Burberry on Dec. 31, the FTSE 100 listed company said.

"I am looking forward to returning to London where I first built my career in the luxury industry to join a talented team with ambitious plans for the future and a strong platform to accelerate growth," Jonathan Akeroyd said.
