Rio Tinto PLC(RIO.L) said on Sunday that it had reached a labor agreement in principle with Canadian trade unions on operations in the western Canadian province of British Columbia.

The agreement was reached after weeks of second-round negotiations on proposed changes to workers' retirement benefits and unresolved grievances, but failed in July.

The Canadian union, representing about 900 workers at the company's aluminium smelter in Kitimat and its power generation facility in Kemano, went on strike at its plant in British Columbia in July after the first round of talks failed.

"both sides are satisfied and the proposed agreement will provide a competitive and sustainable future for the British Columbia plant," Rio Tinto PLC said in a statement on his website on Sunday. "

However, neither side disclosed details of the agreement until the Canadian union submitted the proposed deal to its members and sought approval for a vote, which is expected to take place in the next few days, Rio Tinto PLC added.
