Our data, which represents all workers on a company's payroll, has highlighted a downshift in the labor market recovery. We have seen a decline in new hires, following significant job growth from the first half of the year.

"Despite the slowdown, job gains are approaching 4 million this year, yet still 7 million jobs short of pre-pendemic levels. Service providers continue to lead growth, although there are uncertainty for this sector. Job gains across company sizes grew in lockstep, with small businesses trailing a bit more than usual."

-said Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP.

The matched sample used to develop the ADP National Employment Report was derived from ADP payroll data, which represents 460,000 U.S. clients employing nearly 26 million workers in the U.S. The July total of jobs added was revised from 330,000 to 326,000.

The September 2021 ADP National Employment Report will be released at 8:15 a.m. ET on October 6, 2021.
