From 2019 to 2024, SpaceX plans to use five years to send thousands of satellites needed for networking into low-Earth orbit to form a "star chain" network to provide Internet services. According to the Speedtest report, the average download speed of Starlink satellite Internet service in the US market was 97.23 Mbps in the second quarter of this year, similar to the average download speed of fixed broadband in the United States, which was 115.22 Mbps.
Typically, with a download speed of 100 Mbps, users can download a movie in a minute. In addition, the upload speed of Starlink in the United States is 13.89 Mbps, slightly lower than the 17.18 Mbps of fixed broadband.
Compared with other satellite broadband services in the US market, such as HughesNet and Viasat, Starlink is far ahead in terms of download speed and upload speed. Take the relatively fast HughesNet as an example, its download speed is only 19.73 Mbps, and the upload speed is only 2.43 Mbps.
In markets such as Canada, New Zealand and the UK, "star chain" Internet services are much faster than fixed broadband. In Canada, the average download speed of the Star Link network was 86.92 Mbps in the second quarter of this year, compared with 84.24 Mbps for fixed broadband.
In New Zealand, the average download speed of Starlink is 127.02 Mbps, while fixed broadband is 78.85 Mbps. The upload speed is almost the same, all about 2.3MBps . In the UK, the average download speed of Starlink is 108.30 Mbps, while fixed broadband is 50.14 Mbps.
At the end of October last year, SpaceX was the first to launch a "star chain" testing service in the United States. The service costs $99 a month, while users pay $499 for related equipment, including terminal receivers, tripods and Wifi routers.
