[TechWeb] according to foreign media reports, Tesla made a profit again in the second quarter of 2021, according to foreign media reports, thanks to the growth of sales of Model 3 and Model Y and the lucrative sale of carbon credits. This is the company's eighth consecutive quarter of profitability.

According to Tesla's financial results for the second quarter of 2021 ended June 30, 2021, net income attributable to common shareholders in accordance with GAAP was $1.142 billion, up 998 per cent from a year earlier, and adjusted earnings per share were $1.02, up 920 per cent from a year earlier.

Without non-GAAP, net income attributable to common shareholders was $1.616 billion, up 258 per cent from a year earlier, and adjusted earnings per share was $1.45, up 230 per cent from a year earlier.

So far, Tesla has made a profit for eight consecutive quarters, most of which are driven by carbon emissions points sales.

In the past five years, the sale of carbon credits has generated $3.3 billion for Tesla. Tesla earned $1.58 billion in operating revenue by selling carbon credits in 2020, well above the $593 million in 2019 and $419 million in 2018, and far more than the company's net profit of $721 million.

In the first quarter of 2021, the company earned $518 million in revenue from selling carbon credits, up 46 per cent from a year earlier and accounting for about 5 per cent of its total revenue. In the second quarter of 2021, the company's revenue from selling carbon credits was $354 million, down 17 per cent from a year earlier and accounting for about 3.5 per cent of total revenues in the automotive business.
