Singapore reported the highest number of new cases in a single day in about 11 months, with outbreaks of cluster infections in wholesale fish markets and local food centres in addition to karaoke lounges.

Singapore's Ministry of Health said on Sunday that there were 88 new cases of local transmission, 23 from places of entertainment and 37 related to Jurong fishing port. There were 17 cases of unassociated infections and 4 inbound travelers who were already in quarantine, with a total of 92 new infections that day.

The surge in the number of infections has dealt a blow to Singapore's efforts to restart its economy, with the government resuming a strict eating policy a few days after relaxing measures. Authorities temporarily closed hundreds of nightlife places to contain the spread of the virus, and thousands of people were quarantined.

As the infection in the fishing port spreads to wet goods markets and food centers, the government will continue to test fishmongers across the country.

As of July 16, about 45 per cent of Singapore's population had been vaccinated against COVID-19.
