BMW outsold its competitors in the US in the second quarter as it did a better job of coping with global chip shortages.

Figures released by the company on Tuesday showed that US sales in the second quarter were 96561 vehicles, nearly double the same period last year and 35 per cent higher than in the first quarter. That's 14171 more than its second-placed competitor, Mercedes-Benz.

BMW was also the top seller of luxury cars in the United States in the first half of this year, 7348 more than Mercedes-Benz.

According to US dealers, BMW has done a better job of managing semiconductor reserves, which has helped the company keep up with orders from dealers better than some of its luxury competitors. The SUV, made by BMW at its assembly plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, takes about six to eight weeks to reach a dealer, while Mercedes-Benz takes three months.
