DisneyThe company said on Monday that it plans to close 100 international television channels this year in order to move towards a future centered on streaming services such as Disney+.
Disney CEO Bob Chapec (Bob Chapek) says the company shut down 30 international networks last year.
"most of the content will be transferred to Disney+," he said. As we move directly to consumers, this will remain our core strategy. "
The networks the company shut down last year included (Disney Channel), the British Disney channel, as part of Chapec's efforts to streamline and modernize the entertainment giant.
This year, the company used the Star brand in its Disney+ products launched in Europe, adding more adult-oriented content. Chapek says most Disney+ users in the region have started watching Star shows.
Disney also launched the Disney+ Hotstar in India last year. The service, which features cricket matches and other local content, currently accounts for 30 per cent of Disney+ 's global users (103.6 million). Meanwhile, in April, Disney announced plans to close some of its sports networks in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, China.
