The US stock market experienced a significant decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,936.93, down 626.15 points, and the Nasdaq ended trading at 17,136.30, down 577.33 points.

Due to the August ISM Manufacturing PMI falling below expectations, concerns about a hard landing have increased, leading to a decline in the market after the opening. The Dow Jones also saw profit-taking selling from its all-time high, leading to a day of selling. Selling pressure in the semiconductor sector, including Nvidia (NVDA), further intensified, causing significant selling in the Nasdaq. Towards the end of the day, the market extended its losses. In terms of sectors, telecommunication services and home/personal sectors saw gains, while the semiconductor and manufacturing equipment sectors saw declines.

Shares of low-cost airline Southwest (LUV) rose due to reports that Elliot Investment Management, a significant investor, has reached a 10% shareholding in the company, surpassing the threshold for calling an extraordinary shareholder meeting. Defense company Lockheed Martin (LMT) also rose due to analysts' upgraded investment recommendations and price targets. Real estate services company Redfin (RDFN) saw an increase in its investment recommendation due to anticipated interest rate cuts.

Super Micro Computer (SMCI), a cybersecurity company, saw buying activity after its CEO denied allegations of accounting irregularities made by short-selling investor Hindenburg Research. Alphabet (GOOG), the parent company of Google, fell as analysts lowered their price targets due to uncertainty surrounding antitrust regulations.

After-market trading saw software company Zscaler (ZS) being sold off due to negative outlook.
