Yahoo Finance On X, Elon Musk posts 'true' in response to user claiming ‘Meta can’t be trusted’
Turkey's competition board has imposed a 1.2 billion lira ($37.2 million) fine on social media giant Meta Platforms (META). The penalty stems from two separate investigations into data-sharing practices involving the company’s Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads platforms.
The news has ignited a discussion on rival social media platform X.

The post also caught the attention of Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk, who replied with a single word: “True.”
Threads shutdown
In December 2023, the Turkish Competition Authority initiated an investigation into Meta for potentially breaching competition laws by integrating its social media platforms Threads and Instagram. By March 2024, the board implemented interim measures to restrict data sharing between these two platforms.
To comply with the interim order, Meta announced that it would temporarily shut down Threads in Turkey from April 29.
The investigation involving Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp had led to a fine of 898 million lira. Additionally, a separate fine of 336 million lira was levied for issues specific to Threads.

Questioning trust
This isn’t the first time Musk has commented about trust issues regarding Mark Zuckerberg’s social media empire.
Last summer, Foad Dabiri — the director of engineering at X at the time — posted a screenshot of how WhatsApp was repeatedly using his device’s microphone in the background during nighttime hours.
“WhatsApp has been using the microphone in the background, while I was asleep and since I woke up at 6AM (and that's just a part of the timeline!) What's going on?” Dabiri asked on X.
Musk retweeted the post, commenting, “WhatsApp cannot be trusted.”
WhatsApp later clarified that Dabiri's experience was due to a bug on Android.
“We believe this is a bug on Android that mis-attributes information in their Privacy Dashboard and have asked Google to investigate and remediate,” it said in a post on X.
In a follow-up post, WhatsApp emphasized that its users “have full control” over the settings of their microphones.
“Once granted permission, WhatsApp only accesses the mic when a user is making a call or recording a voice note or video - and even then, these communications are protected by end-to-end encryption so WhatsApp cannot hear them,” it wrote.
