Industry Association: The number of charging stations installed in the EU needs to be increased 8 times to meet demand

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said on Monday that the number of electric vehicle charging stations that the EU needs to install each year is nearly eight times that of 2023 to meet predicted demand.

Zhitong Finance learned that the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said on Monday that the number of electric vehicle charging stations that the EU needs to install each year is nearly eight times that of 2023 to meet the forecast demand. ACEA said that last year, the entire European Union installed more than 150,000 public charging stations, for a total of more than 630,000. The European Commission said in a statement that to achieve the target of 3.5 million charging stations by 2030, it will take about 410,000 to be installed every year.

However, ACEA warns that demand has rapidly exceeded this target and that between 2017 and 2023, sales of electric vehicles in the EU grew three times as fast as charging stations were installed.

ACEA Director General Sigrid de Vries said in a statement: “We are very concerned that infrastructure deployment in recent years cannot keep up with sales of electric vehicles. More importantly, this 'infrastructure gap' is likely to widen in the future, far beyond the European Commission's estimates.”

ACEA estimates that by 2030, 8.8 million charging points will be needed to meet demand, equivalent to 1.2 million per year, 8 times the number installed last year. Sigrid de Vries said: “If we want to close the infrastructure gap and meet our climate goals, we must urgently increase investment in public charging infrastructure.”
