Tesla Autopilot is investigated again in the US

On April 26, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the launch of a new investigation into Tesla's Autopilot feature to see if its OTA update for more than 2 million vehicles in December last year could actually address safety issues.

The origins of this investigation can be traced back to a massive Tesla recall on December 13 last year. At the time, Tesla recalled 2 million cars equipped with driver-assistance software. The intention is to fix potential security issues through OTA updates.

Furthermore, NHTSA also found that compared to other autonomous driving systems, Tesla's Autopilot makes it easier for drivers to lower their vigilance and reduce their willingness to manually control the vehicle. As a result, the new NHTSA investigation will focus on Tesla's OTA update in December last year. The update aims to improve drivers' attention when using Autopilot and Autosteer automatic steering systems by adding warning and reminder functions.

However, NHTSA stated that since some corrective measures are optional and can be turned off by car owners themselves, some new collisions have occurred even after the software was updated.

According to reports, the scope of the new investigation covers all Tesla models equipped with Autopilot, including the upcoming Cybertruck. The time span is from 2012 to 2024. This comprehensive survey will delve into the safety and effectiveness of Tesla's autonomous driving systems to ensure consumers' safety and rights.

Former senior management reduced total holdings worth more than US$180 million

On the same day, Tesla's former senior vice president Drew Baglino announced his resignation and revealed that he had sold about 1.14 million Tesla shares worth US$181.5 million.

Documents show that prior to the most recent sale, Baglino also reduced his Tesla holdings twice this year, totaling about $4 million — one at the end of February and the other at the beginning of April.

Baglino joined Tesla in 2006, initially as an engineer, then promoted to senior vice president in 2016, reporting directly to CEO Musk. Within Tesla, Baglino is seen as an unofficial head of operations.

The reason for the reduction in Baglino's shares has not yet been disclosed.
