ASUS ROG Ally Gets AMD Fluid Motion Frames Technology For Faster Handheld Gaming FPS

ASUS's ROG Ally handheld gets AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology, enabling superior performance with the Ryzen Z1 APUs.

ASUS's ROG Ally Handheld Combined With AMD's Fluid Motion Frames Technology Is Indeed A Sight, Boosted Gaming FPS

Since handheld devices don't feature native drivers like those on desktops from AMD and NVIDIA, the platform does see delayed support for new features like AMD Fluid Motion Frames. However, it seems like ASUS has decided to enhance the experience on the ROG Ally handheld which has now received Fluid Motion Frames through a new driver update, providing handheld gamers with a very simple option to enable the technology rather than complicated methods.

The inclusion of AMD's AFMF will be done through ASUS's iGPU and ACSE driver update, which does include several other changes, as listed below:

We’re excited to announce that AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is going to be available on the ROG Ally! Tomorrow’s (April 25th) iGPU driver and ACSE update contain everything you need to use this new feature. Just open the AMD Software and head to Gaming > Graphics to toggle AMD Fluid Motion Frames on. AFMF is not yet available in the Command Center, but we are working on integrating it further.

•  Enhanced the display speed of the Game Library.
•  Added information to the Real-time Monitor overlay when using AFMF
•  Resolved a sporadic issue where AMD graphics card driver updates in the Update Center could experience timeouts.
•  Expanded Keymap functionality to support the assignment of keys as trigger keys (requires MCU v317 or newer). For example, the M1 button can be assigned as the Left Trigger.

For a quick rundown on what AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) is capable of, the technology squeezes out as many "frames-per-second" as possible by implementing frame interpolation or frame generation on the driver side.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames allows you to enjoy boosted FPS in various games based on the DX12 and DX11 APIs. AFMF is a treat for handhelds because the feature is known to bring in a whopping 97% improvement in average performance, according to AMD. For the ASUS ROG Ally, which is a relatively compact device compared to desktops or laptops, AFMF will certainly take gaming to a whole new level.

ASUS's ROG Ally is the first handheld to receive support for Fluid Motion Frames, and we hope to see other devices witness it as well.
