Comcast Hold Rating Affirmed Amid Broadband Competition and Earnings Challenges

In a report released yesterday, Steven Cahall from Wells Fargo maintained a Hold rating on Comcast (CMCSAResearch Report), with a price target of $43.00.

Steven Cahall has given his Hold rating due to a combination of factors impacting Comcast’s growth and earnings potential. The intense competition in the broadband market is a significant headwind, hindering both growth and the company’s ability to upgrade earnings forecasts. Despite Comcast being a strong player in the industry, the challenging environment and the lack of positive catalysts contribute to a cautious outlook. Additionally, the company’s residential net adds for the first quarter were negative, and the forecast for the remainder of the year is not optimistic due to expected churn and increased competition in the business services sector.
Moreover, Cahall notes that while Comcast is targeting modest growth in broadband average revenue per user (ARPU), operational expenses are likely to offset these gains, leading to stagnant growth. The company’s EBITDA estimates for Cable and Content (C&C) have been adjusted downward, reflecting softer performance in various segments like theme parks and studios. Peacock, Comcast’s streaming service, continues to face questions about its path to profitability. These factors, combined with downward revisions to free cash flow forecasts and a more conservative capital return estimate, have led to a reduction in Comcast’s price target, supporting the Hold rating.

In another report released today, Barclays also assigned a Hold rating to the stock with a $44.00 price target.

CMCSA’s price has also changed moderately for the past six months – from $42.750 to $37.870, which is a -11.42% drop .
