PARIS (Reuters) -French government efforts to slow an influx of Chinese-made electric vehicles are bearing fruit, industry data show, highlighting one of the most sensitive trade issues when China's president visits next week. A surge in imports of Chinese electric cars into Europe has triggered EU tariff threats, which are expected to be a bone of contention when President Emmanuel Macron hosts his Chinese counterpart for a state visit on Monday. France did not wait for a European Union decision on implementing tariffs, instead redesigning its cash bonus scheme in December to exclude the purchase of models made in China, which had rapidly gained market share.

Berkshire pares huge Apple stake as cash, operating profit set records
Berkshire Hathaway significantly reduced its enormous stake in Apple in the first quarter, as Warren Buffett's conglomerate let its cash hoard swell to a record $189 billion. Buffett's company also posted a record operating profit exceeding $11 billion, as its insurance operations benefited from improved underwriting and higher income from investments as interest rates rose. The value of Berkshire's stake in Apple fell 22% to $135.4 billion as of March 31 from $174.3 billion at the end of 2023, even though the iPhone maker's share price fell just 11% in the quarter.

The start-up of LNG Canada, the country's first such export terminal, is likely to strain its natural gas supplies for multiple years and force producers to reduce exports to the U.S., where demand for the fuel is record high, companies said. Shell-led LNG Canada has begun testing its C$40-billion British Columbia terminal ahead of commercial operations starting in mid-2025. The terminal will process up to 2 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd), representing 11% of current Canadian gas output.

Peru's dented mining mojo, hit by years of political turmoil in the Andean country, is being buoyed by strong copper prices and a bullish outlook they will rise further, helping lure back investor interest, the country's mining minister said on Friday. "The price of copper is a great attraction," Romulo Mucho, told Reuters in an interview at his office, a reference to prices that hit two-year peaks of $10,208 a metric ton this week, close to the record high of $10,845 in March 2022. Goldman Sachs earlier in the day hiked its year-end price target to $12,000 per ton, from $10,000 previously, citing the copper market's path into scarcity and expectations of a larger deficit of the key metal needed for electrification.

(Reuters) -Canada's Magna International missed first-quarter profit estimates and cut its full-year overall sales forecast on Friday, as auto parts suppliers navigate ongoing supply constraints and bumpy demand for electric vehicles. Auto parts suppliers have been struggling with lower-than-expected demand for their EV components, as carmakers shift their focus toward producing affordable hybrid vehicles instead. Magna, which produces powertrains, along with assembling complete vehicles, signed agreements with Fisker in 2020 to engineer and manufacture its Ocean SUV.

Pioneer reports lower profit ahead of its takeover by Exxon
Earlier in the day, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission gave the go-ahead to Exxon Mobil's $60 billion purchase of the company, but barred Pioneer's former CEO, Scott Sheffield, from joining Exxon's board on allegations he attempted to collude with OPEC to raise oil prices. Sheffield retired as Pioneer's CEO on Dec. 31, but continues to serve on its board and was due to take a seat on Exxon's board when the acquisition closed.

India's Adani Green Energy posts Q4 adjusted profit rise on strong power sales
India's Adani Green Energy reported an 86% rise in fourth-quarter adjusted profit on Friday, helped by strong energy sales to customers. The Adani Group company's consolidated adjusted profit rose to 10.34 billion rupees (about $124 million) in the quarter ended March 31, while the revenue from power supply rose 23% to 19.41 billion rupees. The company said it made a one-time gain in the year-ago period, excluding which its fourth-quarter profit would have fallen 39%.
