Lenovo (00992) and Meta join forces, big things will happen in AI and mixed reality

On April 22, Lenovo Group (00992) announced the establishment of a new XR partnership with Meta, the world's leading provider of artificial intelligence and mixed reality technology. Lenovo will support Meta Horizon OS in the first batch and provide developers with more choices by supporting a large-scale hardware ecosystem, so that they can develop applications and reach audiences on the platform. The two sides will jointly develop and sell Lenovo's mixed reality products to the market.

This new hardware ecosystem runs on Meta Horizon OS, and Lenovo will use its past experience in co-designing the Oculus Rift S with Meta, as well as deep engineering expertise to develop mixed reality devices for productivity, learning, and entertainment.

Yang Yuanqing, Chairman and CEO of Lenovo Group, said, “Mixed reality is transforming the way people interact with computers by integrating digital experiences and physical space to reach new levels of productivity, learning, and gaming. Building on our past successful partnerships, Lenovo is combining Meta Horizon OS with our leadership and innovation in personal computing to accelerate the adoption of new mixed reality user scenarios such as virtual screens, remote presentation, content consumption, and immersive training.”

Meta Horizon OS is a next-generation computing platform built by Meta over a decade. It has developed technologies such as internal and external tracking, and has developed eye, face, hand, and body tracking for a more natural interaction system and social presence. For mixed reality, it has built a complete technology stack for mixing digital and physical worlds, including high-resolution passthrough, scene understanding, and spatial anchoring.

The growth of the mixed reality market and the growing popularity of use cases such as gaming, entertainment, fitness, productivity, and social presence have created new opportunities for dedicated hardware. As we've seen in the PC and smartphone industry, a broad hardware ecosystem that produces both general-purpose computing devices and more specialized products can best serve consumers, all running on a common platform.

In the future, with the continuous improvement of hardware and software and the decline in prices, more mature products will appear in the XR market. Furthermore, the combination of XR devices and applications with artificial intelligence functions will have a significant impact, and mixed reality technology has a wide range of application space for PC and smart device users. Lenovo has partnered with Meta to make mixed reality technology have a greater impact on Lenovo users.
