Empowering Education – AJF Transforms Lives in Cambodia

Jardine Matheson Holdings ·  Apr 22 00:00

At Jardines, we believe in empowering children with the power of knowledge and education.

In 2017, the ACLEDA-Jardines Education Foundation ('AJF') was founded by Jardine Matheson and ACLEDA Bank, aimed at giving an equal opportunity to all children in Cambodia to receive an education.

AJF currently focuses on providing primary education in the impoverished villages of Preah Vihear, Stung Treng, Oddar Meanchey, Mondul Kiri, and Ratanak Kiri which represent 31% of the land area and 6.5% of the population in Cambodia. Over 50% and 20% of the primary schools in all five provinces do not have access to clean water and sanitary facilities respectively.

AJF builds and renovates school buildings and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) facilities in these areas, creating a safe learning environment that allows students to explore and grow. Upon completion of each school, AJF engages the local community for upkeep and maintenance, fostering a sustainable cycle of operation.

The Sambour Meas Primary School completed construction in December 2022.

Since its inception seven years ago, AJF has had an incredible impact. The Foundation built 11 schools benefitting more than 1,400 pupils. In 2023, three primary schools were built in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces, welcoming over 360 children in the 2023/24 school year.

Looking forward, AJF is working harder than ever. Its latest project is underway at Mondul Kiri province, where the Foundation will be building classrooms and sanitary facilities.
