Shares ofThe Travelers Companies, Inc.(NYSE:TRV) fell sharply during Wednesday's session following first-quarter earnings.

Travelers reported a mixed first quarter, with earnings lagging analyst' expectations. Core income per share reached $4.69 from $4.11 a year ago, missing the $4.90 consensus forecast. Net income per share rose to $4.80 from $4.13 a year earlier.

Travelers shares dipped 8.1% to $205.03 on Wednesday.
