Lockheed Martin (LMT.US) has been awarded a $17 billion contract to develop the next generation of interceptor missiles to protect the US from intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The Zhitong Finance App learned that Lockheed Martin (LMT.US) has obtained a contract worth 17 billion US dollars to develop the next generation of interceptor missiles to protect the US from intercontinental ballistic missile attacks.

Lockheed Martin promised to provide “the most modern, reliable, and technologically advanced interceptor in the history of land-based mid-range defense systems.”

The multi-year contract will be awarded as early as today by the US Missile Defense Agency, which is developing next-generation interceptor bombs (NGI) to modernize current land-based mid-range defense projects, including networks of radar, anti-ballistic missiles, and other equipment.

According to written testimony submitted last week by Missile Defense Agency Director General Heath Collins, NGI is currently in the technology development phase and will transition to product development in May.

The report said that the contract period is unclear, but the first interceptor bomb is expected to be put into use in 2028.
