Simply Wall St ·  Apr 15 12:10

It might seem bad, but the worst that can happen when you buy a stock (without leverage) is that its share price goes to zero. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. To wit, the Kosmos Energy Ltd. (NYSE:KOS) share price has flown 132% in the last three years. Most would be happy with that. In more good news, the share price has risen 8.8% in thirty days.

Since the stock has added US$137m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, Kosmos Energy moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

It is of course excellent to see how Kosmos Energy has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at Kosmos Energy's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 25% in the last year, Kosmos Energy shareholders lost 18%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 1.5% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
