Caleres Insiders Sell US$2.9m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 5 11:14

In the last year, many Caleres, Inc. (NYSE:CAL) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Caleres

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the insider, Mark Schmitt, for US$753k worth of shares, at about US$41.01 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$37.07. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 4.3% of Caleres shares, worth about US$58m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
