Shareholders in AXT (NASDAQ:AXTI) Have Lost 74%, as Stock Drops 30% This Past Week

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 5 06:26

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the AXT, Inc. (NASDAQ:AXTI) share price up 29% in a single quarter. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. The share price has sunk like a leaky ship, down 74% in that time. So we're relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

AXT saw its share price decline over the three years in which its EPS also dropped, falling to a loss. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

AXT shareholders are down 16% for the year, but the market itself is up 27%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand AXT better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - AXT has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
