CyberArk Software Ltd. (NASDAQ:CYBR) Not Flying Under The Radar

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 27 12:37

CyberArk Software Ltd.'s (NASDAQ:CYBR) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 14.8x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios below 4.3x and even P/S below 1.8x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has CyberArk Software Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, CyberArk Software has been doing relatively well. The P/S is probably high because investors think this strong revenue performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as CyberArk Software's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 27%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 62% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 23% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 15% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why CyberArk Software is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What Does CyberArk Software's P/S Mean For Investors?

We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that CyberArk Software maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Software industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
