According to Omdia's latest Tablet and Notebook Display & OEM Market Tracker report, in 2023, due to sluggish demand in the PC market, global OLED tablet panel shipments reached only 3.6 million units, with an annual decline of 9%.

The Zhitong Finance App learned that according to Omdia's latest Tablet and Notebook Display & OEM Market Tracker report, 2023 was impacted by sluggish demand in the PC market, and global OLED tablet panel shipments reached only 3.6 million units, with an annual decline of 9%. In the notebook computer sector, the OLED panel market is even weaker. Shipments in 2023 were only 4 million units. Not only was the annual decline rate as high as 26%, but it also recorded a new annual low of OLED laptop panel shipments since 2021.

Starting in 2024, thanks to Apple's upcoming launch of the new iPad Pro tablet equipped with an OLED panel, the popularity of OLED panels used in PC products has been rekindled. Lin Xiaoru, senior chief analyst at Omdia Display, said that in addition to Korean panel manufacturers starting to supply Apple's high-end tablet products in the second quarter of 2024, Chinese panel manufacturers are also actively investing in expanding the OLED laptop panel product line this year, hoping to seize the market share of middle and high-end PC products. For example, BOE, VIA, and Huiguang have all launched a variety of OLED laptop or tablet products to target 12-inch to 14.x screens, with a resolution potential of 2560x1600 or more, and with a light and thin overall design, they are attacking the combined power of the market 1 PC Wait for the middle to high end markets.

Looking ahead to 2024, the market share of OLED panel applications in notebook computers and tablets is estimated to be 3% and 5%, respectively. Motivated by Apple's introduction of OLED panels into iPad Pro products, the market share of OLED tablets has finally reached 5%. As Apple plans to gradually switch its iPad product line from LCD to OLED panels, the share of OLED tablet panels is expected to rise to 10% in 2027. However, the market share of OLED laptop panels continues to be depressed, and growth is low. The main reason is that LCD laptop panels have mature manufacturing processes and high cost performance advantages, which are in line with the characteristics of highly mature laptop products. It is estimated that after Apple begins to launch new OLED laptop products in 2026, it will be possible to effectively increase the market share of single-digit OLED laptop panels and move towards double digits.

In addition to whether Apple can drive the market share of OLED panels in the future PC market, challenges such as whether the technical capabilities of OLED PC products owned by Korean and Chinese panel suppliers can improve production yield and reduce costs, and even invest in expanding production are also the key to whether future OLED panels can be applied to laptop or tablet products at an accelerated pace.
