GAC Aion, the electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary of GAC Group, has started pre-sales of a new model in Thailand as it ramps up its efforts in international markets.

GAC Aion's Hyper brand announced the start of local pre-sales of the Hyper HT electric SUV at the Bangkok auto show on March 26, according to a press release yesterday.

The ongoing 45th Bangkok International Motor Show runs until April 7, with March 25-26 as media days and March 27-April 7 as public days.

Hyper is the premium brand announced by GAC Aion on September 15, 2022, and the models currently on sale in China include the Hyper SSR supercar, Hyper GT sedan, and Hyper HT, all of which were showcased at the Bangkok auto show.

The first phase of GAC Aion's factory in Thailand will be completed in July, at which time Hyper's models will be introduced gradually, the brand said in a press release yesterday.

Hyper said it plans to build 15 charging stations in Thailand this year and 100 fast-charging stations by 2028.

Hyper will also join forces with the GAC R&D Center to set up a Thai research and development office in April to speed up localized R&D and market demand response, it said.

GAC Aion signed a memorandum of cooperation with a Thai distributor on June 28, 2023, to officially enter the Thai market.

On August 21 last year, GAC Aion said its first batch of vehicles for export -- 100 units of Aion Y Plus -- was loaded on board a ship at Guangzhou's Nansha Port and began shipping to Thailand.

On September 9, 2023, the Aion Y Plus was offered in Thailand in two versions with a starting price of 1,069,900 baht ($29,380) and 1,299,900 baht, respectively.

On January 31 of this year, GAC Aion said it began construction on its plant in Thailand, its first overseas production site.

The plant is located in Rayong province in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), with a planned investment of 2.3 billion baht. It has a design capacity of 50,000 units per year and will be built in two phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion in July 2024.

The first model GAC Aion plans to produce at the Thai plant is a right-hand drive version of the Aion Y Plus, with more models to be produced locally at the plant in the future, it previously said.
