Simply Wall St ·  Mar 26 21:10

Investing in stocks comes with the risk that the share price will fall. Unfortunately, shareholders of B-SOFT Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:300451) have suffered share price declines over the last year. To wit the share price is down 54% in that time. To make matters worse, the returns over three years have also been really disappointing (the share price is 44% lower than three years ago). Furthermore, it's down 26% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

Since B-SOFTLtd has shed CN¥432m from its value in the past 7 days, let's see if the longer term decline has been driven by the business' economics.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

B-SOFTLtd fell to a loss making position during the year. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so it doesn't surprise us that the stock price is down. We hope for shareholders' sake that the company becomes profitable again soon.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that B-SOFTLtd shareholders are down 54% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 14%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 8% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business.
