Tutor Perini Insiders Sell US$4.6m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 22 07:25

Over the past year, many Tutor Perini Corporation (NYSE:TPC) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Tutor Perini Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by Gary Smalley was the biggest sale of Tutor Perini shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$13.67). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was 51% of Gary Smalley's holding.

In total, Tutor Perini insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Insider Ownership Of Tutor Perini

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Tutor Perini insiders own 18% of the company, currently worth about US$126m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.

So What Do The Tutor Perini Insider Transactions Indicate?

Insiders sold Tutor Perini shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive.
