ExlService Holdings Insiders Sell US$2.0m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 17 08:51

The fact that multiple ExlService Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXLS) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

ExlService Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Executive VP & Business Head of Insurance, Vikas Bhalla, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$749k worth of shares at a price of US$31.51 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$29.85. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

In the last year ExlService Holdings insiders didn't buy any company stock. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you click on the chart, you can see all the individual transactions, including the share price, individual, and the date!

Insider Ownership Of ExlService Holdings

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that ExlService Holdings insiders own 3.3% of the company, worth about US$162m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
