There's Reason For Concern Over Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's (SZSE:000981) Massive 27% Price Jump

センステッド・ハイテックグループ(SZSE: 000981)の株価が27%急騰した理由がある

Simply Wall St ·  03/15 18:24

Those holding Sensteed Hi-Tech Group (SZSE:000981) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 15% over that time.

Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies operating in China's Auto Components industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.5x, you may consider Sensteed Hi-Tech Group as a stock to potentially avoid with its 3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

What Does Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Sensteed Hi-Tech Group has been doing very well. It seems that many are expecting the strong revenue performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors' willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 40%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 35% drop in revenue in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 22% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Sensteed Hi-Tech Group's P/S

Sensteed Hi-Tech Group shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our examination of Sensteed Hi-Tech Group revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term isn't resulting in a P/S as low as we expected, given the industry is set to grow. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
