Have AptarGroup Insiders Been Selling Stock?

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 14 06:08

Anyone interested in AptarGroup, Inc. (NYSE:ATR) should probably be aware that the President of Aptar Pharma, Gael Touya, recently divested US$500k worth of shares in the company, at an average price of US$143 each. However, the silver lining is that the sale only reduced their total holding by 9.5%, so we're hesitant to read anything much into it, on its own.

AptarGroup Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, George Fotiades, for US$969k worth of shares, at about US$122 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$141. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was 68% of George Fotiades's holding.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.6% of AptarGroup shares, worth about US$59m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At AptarGroup Tell Us?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. On the plus side, AptarGroup makes money, and is growing profits. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
