Cryoport, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:CYRX) Shares Not Telling The Full Story

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 10 08:55

There wouldn't be many who think Cryoport, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:CYRX) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.5x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Life Sciences industry in the United States is similar at about 3.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Cryoport Performed Recently?

Cryoport certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to deteriorate like the rest, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Cryoport's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Cryoport?

Cryoport's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Despite the lack of growth, the company was still able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. So while the company has done a great job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline so harshly.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 5.2% during the coming year according to the ten analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 2.3%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Cryoport is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Cryoport's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Looking at Cryoport's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
