Investors Could Be Concerned With Utz Brands' (NYSE:UTZ) Returns On Capital

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 6 05:33

If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Although, when we looked at Utz Brands (NYSE:UTZ), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Utz Brands is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.014 = US$34m ÷ (US$2.7b - US$231m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2023).

Therefore, Utz Brands has an ROCE of 1.4%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Food industry average of 10%.

What Can We Tell From Utz Brands' ROCE Trend?

When we looked at the ROCE trend at Utz Brands, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 3.5% over the last five years. Meanwhile, the business is utilizing more capital but this hasn't moved the needle much in terms of sales in the past 12 months, so this could reflect longer term investments. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.

The Bottom Line

In summary, Utz Brands is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Since the stock has gained an impressive 86% over the last five years, investors must think there's better things to come. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.

While Utz Brands doesn't shine too bright in this respect, it's still worth seeing if the company is trading at attractive prices. You can find that out with our FREE intrinsic value estimation for UTZ on our platform.
