奥特曼被曝身价超过20亿美元 但与OpenAI无关

Ultraman was revealed to be worth over 2 billion US dollars, but it has nothing to do with OpenAI

Sam Altman (Sam Altman) has become the face of the artificial intelligence boom due to his role as CEO of OpenAI. But his wealth goes far beyond the startup behind ChatGPT.

According to the data, the 38-year-old billionaire is worth at least 2 billion US dollars, but this figure does not include OpenAI's shares. The company's latest valuation is 86 billion US dollars.

Ultraman has stated many times that he does not own shares in OpenAI. Most of his wealth is in venture capital institutions and startup investment projects. His net worth is expected to grow substantially over the next few months, thanks to Reddit's initial public offering (IPO), where he is one of Reddit's largest shareholders.

Ultraman declined to comment on the news.

Ultraman's source of wealth is relatively unclear. He has invested in many minority owned companies, such as Musk's Neuralink, which did not disclose his specific shareholding ratio.

According to regulatory documents and estimates, most of Ultraman's trackable net worth comes from $1.2 billion invested in a range of venture capital funds. The main name of these funds is Hydrazine Capital.

Also, according to Apollo Projects' official website, he has 434 million US dollars in the project, which is mainly used to invest in a “moonshots” (moonshots) project. Apollo Projects is a venture capital company co-founded by Ultraman and his brothers to invest in future new technology.

There are also VC-backed entities owned by Ultraman, which hold 8.7% of the popular website Reddit. The site recently filed for an IPO. According to reports, the current IPO may value the company as high as 6.5 billion US dollars. This would be a windfall for these funds, which hold more than twice as many shares as Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman (Steve Huffman).

Ultraman has also invested heavily in two lesser-known startups. He led a $500 million investment round in nuclear fusion company Helion Energy in 2021 and invested $180 million in Retro Biosciences, a biotech company dedicated to extending the average human lifespan by 10 years.

“I've invested a lot,” Ultraman told the “MIT Technology Review” (MIT Technology Review) last year. “I basically invested all of my liquid net worth in these two companies.”

In 2005, Ultraman co-founded Y Combinator, a startup incubator with Hoffman and Alexis Ohanian (Alexis Ohanian), another founder of Reddit. At the time, he was also the CEO of a geolocation company called Loopt. The company was acquired at a price that was not much higher than the price of financing, so it became a relatively unsuccessful risky project. In 2014, Ultraman became the president of Y Combinator and supported several well-known companies incubated through Y Combinator, including Instacart.

Ultraman left Y Combinator in 2019 to become CEO of OpenAI. The company later added a profit structure to cap investors' financial expenses.

While testifying and being interviewed in Congress, Ultraman said he does not own shares in OpenAI. Company spokesman Steve Sharpe (Steve Sharpe) said in an email statement that although some employees received a similar equity compensation plan (PPU) with profit participation, this plan has nothing to do with Ultraman.

Sharp also said that Ultraman will not receive any financial benefits from OpenAI's startup fund, which raised $175 million to invest in early-stage artificial intelligence companies. According to Sharp, although regulatory documents show that Ultraman owns more than 75% of the fund's shares, he did not invest with his own money, nor did he profit from the fund's earnings.
