In 2023, the country's total lithium battery output exceeded 940 GWh, an increase of 25% over the previous year, and the total output value of the industry exceeded 1.4 trillion yuan.

The Zhitong Finance App learned that data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on March 4 shows that in 2023, China's lithium-ion battery (“lithium battery”) industry continued to grow. According to the lithium battery industry specification announcement enterprise information and industry association estimates, the country's total lithium battery output exceeded 940 GWh, an increase of 25% over the previous year, and the total output value of the industry exceeded 1.4 trillion yuan.

In the battery sector, the output of consumer, power, and energy storage lithium batteries from January to December was 80 GWh, 675 GWh, and 185 GWh, respectively, and the installed capacity of lithium batteries (including new energy vehicles and new energy storage) exceeded 435 GWh. Export trade continued to grow. From January to December, the country's total lithium battery exports reached 457.4 billion yuan, an increase of more than 33% over the previous year.

In the first-level materials sector, production of cathode materials, anode materials, diaphragms, and electrolytes reached 2.3 million tons, 1.65 million tons, 15 billion square meters, and 1 million tons respectively from January to December, all increasing by more than 15%.

In the second-tier materials sector, production of lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide from January to December was about 463,000 tons and 285,000 tons, respectively. The average prices of battery-grade lithium carbonate and battery-grade lithium hydroxide (fine powder grade) were 258,000 yuan/ton and 273,000 yuan/ton, respectively.

Product prices in the lithium battery industry declined markedly throughout the year. From January to December, the prices of battery cells and battery-grade lithium salts dropped by more than 50% and 70%, respectively.
