Anhui Tatfook Technology Co., Ltd (SZSE:300134) Stock Catapults 30% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 3 21:20

Anhui Tatfook Technology Co., Ltd (SZSE:300134) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 30% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 12% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, Anhui Tatfook Technology may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.8x, considering almost half of all companies in the Communications industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 4.5x and even P/S higher than 8x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Anhui Tatfook Technology Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Anhui Tatfook Technology over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Anhui Tatfook Technology?

Anhui Tatfook Technology's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 12%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 9.7% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 51% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why Anhui Tatfook Technology's P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

The Bottom Line On Anhui Tatfook Technology's P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Anhui Tatfook Technology's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Anhui Tatfook Technology revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
